Dr. Juan M. Flavier, current president of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction and 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for Internation al Understanding, has compiled enough “rural parables” to fill seven small volumes. Thus starts a new series which will be a must for collectors of his books.
His three previous books were also published by New Day: Doctor to the Barrios, 1970; My Friends in the Barrios, 1974; and Back to the Barrios, 1978.
A consistent scholar since childhood, Dr. Flavier graduated from both the elementary grades and high school in Baguio City as valedictorian; he took his medical studies at the University of the Philippines and interned at the UP- PGH where he was selected Outstanding Intern in 1960. He also earned certificates in Management Accounting and in Communications in 1968, as well as a Masters in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University in 1969 as the first Asian Commonwealth Fund Scholar.
Among the many honors he has received are memberships in the Phi Kappa Phi International Honor Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta International Honor Society, and the Hon or Society for the Advancement of Research; he was also TOYM awardee in Rural Development in 1967. Dr. Flavier has been cited in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World (1987), the 1987 Personalities in America, the 1987 Men of Achievement (England), and the 1987 International Directory of Distinguished Leadership.
He has attended innumerable international conferences eithers guest speaker, consultant, or participant; with his very broad background and infectious sense of humor, he is also in constant demand speaker in local and national meetings or church services.
Dr. Flavier serves as trustee for Silliman University, Communication Foundation for Asia, Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, Family Planning Organization of the Philippines (of which he is Past President), Institute of Family and Community Health, and the Dr. Jose Rizal Memorial Foundation; and is Chairman of the Mindanao Agricultural Resettlement Agency, which is a joint project between the Department of Agrarian Reform and the Nation al Council of Churches in the Philippines.
