The two most famous and recognizable heritage structures on Kulangsu are arguably the Sea and Sky Mansion (No. 34-42 Fujian Road) of Huang Xiulang (nbUy Siu Liong) and the villa on 32 Fujian Road of Shi Guangming (Benito Siy Cong Bieng). These two buildings directly face each other across the street – the happy outcome of a long-standing friendship between two business leaders in the Philippines. The book deals with the lives of these two Kulangsu pioneers and the multicultural influences on the design of their architectural legacies. Their stories reinforce Kulangsu’s value and significance as a repository of global heritage and culture, and underscore the deep economic and social ties between the Philippines and China over many centuries.
Robert Y. Siy, whose Chinese name is Shi Dade, is the grandson of Ng Kim Kheng (Huang Jinqiong, daughter of Huang Xiulang/Uy Siu Liong) and Leoncio Siy Cong Bieng (son of Shi Guang- ming/Benito Siy Cong Bieng). He graduated from Cornell University in the United States in 1982 with a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning. His professional career has been in development, where he has worked in academic institutions, international development finance agencies, the Philippine government and civil society organizations. Since 2018, he has written a weekly column titled “Mobility Matters” for The Manila Times. He has authored several publications on public policy and development management.
Zhan Zhaoxia, a cultural and historical expert on Kulangsu, is a specially invited cultural and historical researcher at the Xiamen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the Deputy Director of the Kulangsu Research Center at Xiamen University, Former Executive Editor of the Journal of Gulangyu Studies. She has published several books, including Kulangsu: People and Stories, Kulangsu Scholars (co-authored with Hong Buren), Historical Tales of Kulangsu (co-authored with Li Qiyu ), Trade and Society: The Amoy Network on the China Coast 1683-1735 (translated), The Story of The Amoy in 1922 (compiled).
