Fetters on Tomorrow is the third of a series (The Sin of Some Fathers and History: Myths and Reality). It is, by and large, an expanded national situationer composed of Renato Constantino’s columns in The Daily Globe (which has since closed) and The Manila Bulletin where he presently writes twice weekly. The whole series is addressed mainly to concerned citizens and advocates of change in general and the progressive sector in particular.
The first part consists of columns that analyze and dissect the Philippine Left (and what’s left of it). His critique of the Left is addressed to all factions with the hope that they view it in the light of his desire to see a revivified Left. He has, after all, been a staunch advocate of the Left for more than fifty years. While he critically reflects on opportunities that have been frittered away, he also reaffirms his belief that the process of working for change must be firmly anchored on our knowledge of our history if we as a people are to acquire ase of nationhood. The second segment discusses empowerment. Education comes under scrutiny in the third section. The last part touches on today’s political landscape where he traces its roots to events and policies of the past.
