First released in 1895, and considered the first Filipino photobook, Recuerdos de Filipinas exhibits early photographs of a nation before revolution, before the Americans, and way before the life we know today. Seen through the lens and words of Félix Laureano—a Barcelona-based photographer from Panay, as he recalls his memories of the Philippines, newlyweds arriving at their home, kids bathing by the river, an early form of the karinderya, a group of guards called the cuadilleros, and various practices that we may still see today. This new edition also features a background on Félix Laureano, completing a portrait of a photographer who, unbeknownst to him, would release the first Filipino photobook.
