By Juan M. Flavier
Published by New Day Publishers, ©1974, reprinted 2011.
Dr. Flavier introduces the reader to some of his friends in the barrios-and soon they become his friends also. They come alive as, with deft, down-to-earth strokes, the author paints them on his canvas of rural life. Readers discover the answers to such intriguing questions as “Do eggs die?” “Why does operating a poultry lead to having many children?” “How does a rural swain woo his girl?” “Who gets rich in rice production?” “How do you explain the 1.U.D. in the barrio?” Medical workers, agricultural economists, family planners, sociologists, who enjoyed Doctor to the Barrios, will find here another “painless textbook; and seekers of good solid humor will enjoy several hours of entertainment! All will grow in their understanding and appreciation of the 70 per cent of the Filipino people who live in rural areas.
DR. JUAN M. FLAVIER, although still a very young man, is an international authority on rural reconstruction. He is Vice President, responsible for training and the health department of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, Silang, Cavite. Before coming to his present position, Dr. Flavier worked with the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement for eight years. He received the M.D. degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1960; that institution voted him as its distinguished alumnus for 1973. He serves as Professorial Lecturer for two Institutes of the University of the Philippines: Public Health, and Social Work and Community Development.
The scope of his concern is shown by some of his volunteer commitments: Chairman, Mindanao Agricultural Resettlement Agency; and a Trustee of Silliman University; the Nutrition Foundation; Freedom from Hunger Campaign Committee; Family Planning Organization of the Philippines; the National Movement for Science and Technology; and the Social Communication Center.
Dr. Flavier is a very popular speaker and writer. His first book, Doctor to the Barrios, is still in great demand: so far 24,000 copies have been printed in the Philippines, and a translation of it is selling in Indonesia.
