A collection of fifteen essays by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin (1917-2004), this book was first published in 1988 under the full title ‘Culture and History: Occasional Notes on the Process of Philippine Becoming’. Challenging certain views of Philippine history, particularly the Philippine Revolution and the role of individuals in the events at the turn of the century, Joaquin argues that Culture and History are not separate and mutually exclusive, rather they must be conjoined in order to understand the ‘nation-in-the-making-called-the-Philippines.’
