Back To The Barrios is the third volume of vignettes about barrio life and mores written by speaker-in-great-demand, Dr. Juan M. Flavier.
Dr. Flavier recently became president of the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IRR), after being its vice-president for many years. He had previously worked with the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) for eight years.
His many commitments here and abroad statistically reduce the number of hours he can spend with his family. When questioned about this point, Dr. Flavier philosophically replied, “It is not the amount of time we spend together, but the quality of how we spend the time we are together that counts.”
The raw manuscript for Back To The Barrios received the last week of August 1978 and was rushed through the stages of publication in order to get the book out before the close of the year. Why? Because once upon a time, Dr. Flavier had replied, when urged to write and have his books published oftener, “No, I want to pace my books so my reading public will not get satiated – once every four years is enough.” This was back in 1974 when his My Friends In The Barrios made its debut. (His first book – Doctor To The Barrios – was published in 1970.) So, to live up to Dr. Flavier’s schedule of one book every four years, New Day Publishers has worked very hard, and proudly presents this book.
For the “sophisticated” Metro Manila or any other city-bred reader, the stories about his friends in the barrios that Dr. Flavier relates in his books are refreshing. We can all achieve fresh new insights by, every so often, going Back To The Barrios.
