Mauro Malang Santos (January 20, 1928 – June 10, 2017), is an award-winning Filipino cartoonist, illustrator, and fine arts painter. The renowned painter started out as newspaper layout artist and editorial cartoonist for The Manila Chronicle at the age of 19.“You don’t really have to learn what you feel from books… What would have learned at Fine Arts School, I learned in 20 years at the Chronicle; that’s why I call it Chronicle College.”
Malang was a 1963 TOYM [Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines] Awardee. In 1964, Malang was named “Artist of the Year” by the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists, and in 1981, awarded an Araw ng Maynila Award for his contributions to Philippine art. In 1994, he was given a Gawad CCP para sa Sining Award [CCP Award for the Arts]. The Gawad CCP Para sa Sining is the highest given award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) given to individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the Philippine arts and culture.
