In the 19th century, Ilocano journalist Isabelo de los Reyes attempted to build an archive of popular knowledge found in local customs and traditions, preserved in writings, artifacts, games, ceremonies, speech practices, oral traditions, and other expressions of popular behavior and thought, and envisioned it as a continuous open-ended multi-volume project. He published El Folk-Lore Filipino (1889), a two-volume compilation of local knowledge but was not able to sustain what he had begun. National Artist for Literature Resil B. Mojares remakes de los Reyes’ eccentric but groundbreaking project in this book that offers strange wonders, odd surprises, and bizarre curiosities – indispensable materials for understanding Filipino history and culture.
