The idea for this book came in October 1996 while photographing Mount Apo for the PNOC calendar. Spellbound, world-renowned photographer George Tapan thought of doing a piece on biodiversity at this heritage mountain for an international magazine. The idea took a life of its own and grev into a book project to mark the 20th year of PNOC-EDC.
This book presents the biodiversity profile in and around the 701-hectare geothermal reservation entrusted to PNOC in the Mount Apo Natural Park. There are compelling reasons for coming up with this book.
Many forms of life are said to disappear as wilderness areas give way to development. But just how much or how little is lost has often been a matter of guesswork. At the same time, scientists have pointed to the need for scientific studies that could provide benchmarks on the various ecosystems. Thus the book puts to good use the wealth of scientific data gathered in the course of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
By early 1997, the first 52MWe power plant would be fully operational and the book may well provide the baseline for determining how the environment has fared for better or worse decades hence.
The book is presented in two parts. Part I is a narrative on the mountain, its resources and its people, followed by an intimate profile of the diverse habitats and important species. Part II gives an overview of conservation issues and programs with special focus on stakeholders’ initiatives Mount Apo.
This book is designed to please both scientist and layman. Thus, contributions from known experts in biodiversity are presented side by side with illustrations and listings, together with stunning photographs that can only be described as nature ‘s second best.
This book represents the ardent, earnest efforts of the company to respond in a unique way to what can the most difficult challenge of this generation.
