It has always been a dream of many Dipolognons to have a coffee table book that would highlight the city’s important events as well as chronicle its achievements through the various phases of its history. We mulled over the idea as early as my first term in office. However, we waited for a more opportune time, and there could be no other time more significant than the Centennial of Dipolog City!
The book, appropriately titled 100 Years-Dipolog Soaring High, attempts to showcase the story of Dipolog City through photographs eloquently documenting meaningful events, highlighting milestones of a place that has lived through one hundred years.
We are happy to have worked with a great photographer who has been with us on many important occasions. Mr. Geroge Tapan is not a Dipolognon but has in his collection many priceless photos of events and people of Dipolog taken in the span of ten years or so. Some of the pictures in this book are part of his one man exhibit, Pamana ng Panahon, which one of the highlights of the Centennial Celebration. The pictures of old Dipolog come from collections of friends who managed to keep them as family heirlooms.
100 Years-Dipolog Soaring High is a book that is intended to be kept and treasured for its beautiful photographs of Dipolog as well as the memories that are neatly tucked within the pages of the book.
George Tapan wanted to show a different side of Dipolog, one that most people do not see. Over a period of a year, George periodically returned to Dipolog to capture the city’s true character. Through George’s eyes, one sees a city brought to life not by flashy structures or gimmickry, but by nature’s unheralded beauty and by the warmth and gentle spirit of its people. In this book, with his pure pictures, George tells the story of a city on the verge of greatness, a city that has begun to soar.
George’s ability to see and capture the essence of the places he has been to has garnered him numerous awards, including the 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest Winner, Places Category; the 2012 PATA Gold Award for Best Travel Photo; the 1999 Kalakbay Award for Best Travel Photo; and in 1990, the ASEANTA Award for Best Travel Photo, and the PATA Gold Award for Best Travel Photo.
