This volume covers all aspects of Prof. Yasushi Kikuchi’s long-term academic as well as social activities. Professor Kikuchi is one of the distinct anthropologists in Japan. He has done extensive field research in the Philippines for more than 40 years, as well as in other parts of Southeast Asia such as Cambodia. His work is well known especially in the field of kinship studies, but this book also covers his activities in the fields of development anthropology, medical anthropology and human rights. He is also a pioneer in analyzing socioeconomic development issues from anthropological perspectives. His innovative work extended later to application of anthropological thought and research method to solve aspects of contemporary human social and political problems which brought a significant impact on many people in various fields outside anthropology such as government sections, development agencies, or enterprise corporate companies.

His work has touched many people all over the world so that at the occasion of his retirement from Waseda University in 2009, his friends and colleagues who respect his work agreed to publish a book to honor his contributions.

In addition to articles covering his three major fields of interest, the volume includes articles on Southeast Asian regional studies, another field with which Professor Kikuchi has been concerned. Through reading this volume, readers would understand how extensively and intensively Professor Kikuchi has contributed to better understanding human and social issues.
