Maybelle Padua writes that she wishes to tread Edith Stein’s philosophical path and so she does. In keeping with Stein’s oft used method of philosophic dialogue, our author here establishes parallels between Stein’s important concepts on the nature and intrinsic value of the woman with that of other important modern thinkers. This makes for interesting reading and will be welcome to both followers of Stein and to contemplators of the contemporary woman.

Maybelle Padua’s book is a welcomne study of Stein’s philosophy of woman. It situates Stein’s work within broader philosophical and historical contexts, giving readers the opportunity to learn more about the richness and complexity of questions concerning the role of empathy, sexual difference, and the psychology of women vis-à-vis claims of personal and holistic comportment.

Contemplating Woman in the Philosophy of Edith Stein, with its over 300 references, is an excellent index on the historical development of the definition and identity of a woman. The book, having covered woman from the beginning of time to 1942, the year of Stein’s Auschwitz death. makes a good springboard to study woman in the subsequent, our past, 60 years.

Edith Stein is significant for her genuine discovery of womanhood, which she forcefully presented to the world to be recognized as such. The woman is superior in feelings or, at least, is coequal with men in emotional, intellectual, and physical capacities. Maybelle Padua’s work on Stein and the woman is a major contribution to the understanding of the philosophical emancipation of the feminine from the traditional patriarchal social biases.
