This book, BenCab @ 80: Homage to National Artist Benedicto Cabrera, is De La Salle University’s gesture of paying tribute to a laudable citizen of the art world in general and of his nation.
With reference to Lee Cheshire’s excellent book, Key Moments in Art, I would say that this book not only provides the readers with a glimpse of the key moments in the artistic journey of the National Artist. This volume is also a most concise, unique, and eloquent “exegesis” (in the etymological sense) of BenCab as a key phenomenon in Philippine art. “Out of” this judicious collection of the artist’s words and images, creations and re-creations, readers are “led and guided” into the “sacred wood” of one of the most celebrated and versatile Philippine artists.
Readers of this book will find much to discover and relish in the artistic production of BenCab, as they are quided by the artist’s understated words and spectacular images in this volume, into BenCab’s “fictive universe” (as the phenomenologists would speak of with great reverence).
