Photograper George Tapan “showed a perfect sense of timing and composition in the way he captured the two small human subjects in this beautiful scene, and that really made the shot,” noted judge Tim Laman in reference to the photo titled “Into the Green Zone.” The stunning photo, which gained worldwide accolade, bagged the grand prize in the Places Category of the 2011 National Geographic Photo Contest.

This same winning image, which bested 21,000 entries all over the world, happens to be the cover of the breathtaking 288-page coffee-table book “Into the Green Zone: Palawan Islands.”

“Dedicated to the Filipinos and the Palaweños, this is likewise a tribute to Palawan’s persistent goodness as a place and a celebration of its compelling power to put humankind back in perspective,” said French national geophysical engineer LouisPaul Heussaff, one of the proud publishers of this book.

The book is co-published by Simon Leith of New Zealand and Hong Kong-based designer Eugene Ong. Having succeeded in capturing Palawan’s natural beauty, it contains six chapters: “An Ancient Archipelago”; “Habitat and Wildlife”; “Land of Safe Harbor”; “People and Culture”; “Environment and Industry”; and “Into Modern Times.”
