Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) spearheads efforts to identify, protect, and preserve cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding universal value to humanity. World heritage sites belong to all of the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory they are located.
As of July 2006, there are 830 properties in 138 states listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Featured in the exhibition of photographs by Kazuyoshi Miyoshi are five of the 13 World Heritage Sites in Japan—Buddhist Monuments in Horyu-ji Area (1993), Himeji-jo (1992), Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (1994), Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara (1998), and Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range (2004).
UNESCO, through the World Heritage Convention, gives a strong charge to all the citizens of the world to consciously value cultural and natural heritage, for these are irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.
