About Damian Domingo
As the foremost Filipino painter of the early nineteenth century, Damian Domingo is renowned for his mastery of portraiture-as rendered in official portraits of Spanish governor generals and miniatures on ivory sheets, religious paintings, and for watercolor albums of costumes and inhabitants of the Philippines or tipos del pais. In 1821, Domingo opened the first private art school in Asia, established on Western art principles, in his residence in Tondo.
